Bio: Colum Murphy is an award-winning editorial leader and global journalist with expertise building and running digital news organizations. He helped create Sixth Tone, an English-language news and media organization based in Shanghai, setting editorial vision and leading a team of 45+ journalists. Colum is a former China correspondent with The Wall Street Journal, and past deputy editor of The Far Eastern Economic Review in Hong Kong.
He is passionate about digital storytelling. In 2017, Colum completed a five-week, 3,000-mile road trip across China, which culminated in a bilingual English-Chinese multimedia project that encompasses text, photo, and video, including drone footage. A graduate of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, he is originally from Ireland, and has spent most of his career in Asia in a variety of media and corporate roles including in Japan, Thailand and Greater China.
